Monte Rosa Trekking, Zermatt: I’ve been through hell in Ice Age

It was a surprise: my friend had been staying for a night at the Monte Rosa hut in Zermatt, Valais, in order to climb it from Rotenboden.

Me, I did not know the course of the trek of Mont-Rose and I let myself be guided in this adventure too difficult for me …

The Mont-Rose hut is a hyper-modern mountain hut built in 2009, located at 2883m above sea level and completely covered with aluminum plates and photovoltaic solar collectors. The cabin is able to cover 90% of its energy needs.

We started our trek after taking a train from Zermatt to Rotenboden.
The beginning of the hike is very pleasant, we go down to the glacier in the middle of flowering meadows and we had the chance to observe an Edelweiss and some marmots. Two things I’ve been waiting to see for a long time in Switzerland!

It is a quiet walk with a superb view of the Matterhorn as we enter.

The scenery changes as we go along and the green meadows gradually turn into a greyish and white landscape.

Things get complicated when we arrive at a steep, metallic ladder, hanging on the rock that we have to go down. The ladder must be 15 meters from the ground …

My heart beating and my throat dry, I go down trembling. From above, what I had not seen is that the ladder stops clear, and I realize that I have to step over the void to put my feet on a second scale, parallel to the first.

After a lot of courage and a good dose of adrenaline, we continue through steep paths, ropes on the most delicate passages help us, but the descent is impressive, on the edge of the precipice …

Finally, we are on the glacier, we put on our crampons and go for a great ride. If the glacier is a difficult passage because it contains many crevasses, I liked to walk, we really feel elsewhere …
